ISTANBUL, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's e-commerce volume surged to 14.2
billion U.S. dollars for the first six months of this year amid the COVID-19
pandemic, Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan announced on Thursday.
Pekcan told reporters in the capital Ankara that the e-commerce
transactions in the country achieved a 64-percent year-on-year growth between
January and June and hit 91.7 billion Turkish liras (14.2 billion dollars).
"E-commerce has become an essential way for all sectors doing business
both in domestic and foreign trade," she said.
"When considering the geostrategic position and logistical advantages
of our country, we can become a global e-commerce hub in the upcoming
future," Pekcan pointed out, adding that the ministry has been trying to
develop new projects to improve the scope of e-commerce even further.
The minister also said the pandemic conditions have let more and more
Turks, including businesses, to involve in e-commerce activities in a much
effective way.
The Turkish government had imposed lockdown measures to curb the spread of
the pandemic in March and launched "stay-at-home" orders until the
beginning of June when it eased the restrictions.
Metin Turkyilmaz, a freelance economy writer for the Dunya daily, told
Xinhua that the e-commerce volume is expected to hit as much as 25 billion
dollars at the end of this year, and the scope of the growth cannot be
underestimated.
"As Turkish people are generally keen and prone to use technology, the
development path of e-commerce in the country is widely open," he said,
noting that a very significant part of society has smartphones, and most people
are glued to technological developments.
According to the ministry's data, 37.5 percent of those who used e-commerce
in the January-June period were between the ages of 25 and 34, while 22.5
percent between 35 and 44 years old.
The data showed that the rate of using e-commerce dropped to 12.3 percent between
the ages of 45 and 54, and 7.1 at the ages of 55 to 64.
Turkyilmaz said the ratio of using e-commerce could be remarkably high
among younger generations in the country, but the coronavirus conditions taught
almost all ages how to make an online order.
"To avoid going to shopping malls or groceries over contamination
risks, many people are now using e-commerce sites, no matter how old they
are," he said.
Ipek Candemir, a 30-year-old young woman, told Xinhua that she has been
doing all kinds of her shopping, including household appliances, food, and
outfits, online since March.
"It has become very risky to go out over the coronavirus threat in
crowded locations," Candemir said. "Additionally, all the shops are
24/7 open in the virtual world."
She also taught her 60-year-old mother how to do online grocery shopping
during the quarantine days.
"She found it very easy, fast, and safe thanks to the high technology
involved," Candemir noted. Enditem
